The Horse, Helping A Girl To Heal

A few weeks ago I mentioned on my STEP BY STEP Facebook page that I was getting a horse… This made my family a little nervous as I had never EVER owner a horse before or even really knew how to ride for that matter.
I did a lot of research about how horses help people heal and soon realised this would be a whole different kind of therapy for me.

Along came Penny, this beautiful creature with the most beautiful, trusting eyes and the moment I met her, I instantly fell in love.

She had never been around a wheelchair so this was going to be a whole new experience for the both of us.
The first day I tried doing anything with her, she needed to be wormed..

While trying to get the wormer in her mouth I lost my balance as I was standing and fell right in front of her feet.
As I was falling I was petrified this huge creature was going to stand on me, when in fact, Penny took a step back so that she didn’t injure me. She then looked at me as if to say, “ok get up.”
This blew my mind as I couldn’t believe this horse had already realised I was different..
This made me fall in love with her all over again.

I have recently joined the RDA (RIDING FOR DISABILITIES) to learn not only how to care for Penny in my situation but also to learn how to ride, and I am so excited!

So far I have taught Penny to walk on a loose lead beside me, and when theres no food around, she does this very well!

We have definitely bonded and she’s a lot like me in so many ways! Useless when there’s food around, grumpy when she’s to hot, but absolutely loves being pampered and cuddled :)

I can’t wait to see what our future holds!
